THE VISIONARY BEHIND THE SUNDAL CHAIR
Andreas Engesvik is one of Scandinavia’s most respected designers. He is known for his thoughtful approach and his ability to seamlessly blend tradition with modernity. Andreas brings a unique vision to every creation and in our exclusive Q/A he shares the inspirations, creative influences, and design philosophy that have shaped his career.
Are you curious how his passion for craftsmanship influences his furniture designs? Dive into his thoughts on timeless design and innovation!
Andreas, can you tell us about your journey as a designer? What initially drew you to the world of design, and how has your style evolved over time? My fascination with objects began in childhood when my mother would take me to flea markets, where I became captivated by the craftsmanship, history, and character of well-made pieces. Over time, my style has evolved towards simplicity, functionality, and a deep appreciation for quality materials.
What are the biggest influences in your life and work? I draw inspiration from kind people, beautiful places, and the pursuit of knowledge. The combination of curiosity and meaningful human connections has shaped my approach to design, making it both practical and emotionally engaging.
What drives you in your work? The excitement of new ideas, the challenge of working with different clients. The constant opportunity to learn something new fuels my passion for design.
The Sundal chair has received a lot of attention for its timeless design. What was your vision when you started developing the chair? My goal was to create something that felt effortlessly simple yet refined, with a strong emphasis on comfort.
What design principles do you consider most important when creating furniture for outdoor environments? Functionality, elegance, and durability are essential. Outdoor furniture should not only withstand the elements but also age beautifully over time. High-quality materials and thoughtful design ensure that each piece remains timeless and practical.
If you could choose a dream project to work on, what would it be? And what types of design challenges would you like to tackle in the future? It’s hard to say! However, I believe we need to shift our focus towards creating products that truly last—prioritizing longevity and sustainability over fleeting trends.
What do you do to find inspiration in your daily life? I find inspiration everywhere—in nature, in everyday objects, and in my passion for restoring old cars. There’s something fascinating about giving new life to well-crafted things.
What do you hope architects and interior designers will keep in mind when choosing furniture like Sundal for their projects? Comfort and quality should always come first. A well-designed piece should not only look beautiful but also provide a sense of ease and durability that stands the test of time.
Finally, can you give us some recommendations on what to do in Sunndal, Norway? What are the must-see places and activities? I highly recommend staying at Sundal Hotel, a charming old wooden hotel owned and run by a young couple who are passionate about preserving its history. Enjoy local cuisine, soak in the breathtaking views by the fjord, and take advantage of the incredible hiking trails in the surrounding mountains. It’s a place that truly captures the beauty and tranquility of Norway.
