The islands along Sweden’s west coast are shaped by wind and salt. On the shores of Saltö, you’ll see smooth driftwood framed by sea holly and oyster plants. It’s so beautiful you might want to put a sofa right on the shore. It’d have to be a sturdy one to work here. And easy on the eye. So, what if we were to let this landscape commission a sofa? “Make it from aluminum”, the shore might say. “Then salt and rain can have their way. And give it sumptuous Sunbrella-covered cushions that dry really quick.” Fair enough. “And if it’s not asking too much, make it a solid three-seater. No fuss, design-wise. Simple but not plain.”
Great, we’ll have a go.
Matilda Lindblom studied Carl Malmsten Furniture Studies at Linköping University, and at Sweden’s University College of Arts, Crafts and Design. She has a highly developed sense for design and materials. Grinda, Djurö and Oxnö are three good examples of her ability to make furniture that at first glance appears simple and straight forward, but when you take a closer look, reveals intricate qualities and clever details that lifts design from purely construction to a craft.
